Today
to Scenes from Portland Henry Benitez, chairman of the 2006 Symposium in Portland, welcomed all 2,092 of us to “the Silicon Forest” with the theme of “‘Exploring EMC Frontiers’ as we step into the future of EMC while recognizing the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the 300th birthday of the great Benjamin Franklin.” Exhibitors representing 161 companies occupied 225 booths, similar to Chicago in 2005. Tuesday night’s welcome reception was at the headquarters hotel, the Portland Hilton and Executive Towers, while Wednesday’s Gala Banquet and Thursday’s Awards Luncheon occurred in the Oregon Convention Center across the Willamette River. The bigger river, the Columbia, is north of that with Washington state on the other side. The city’s free light rail system, MAX, conveyed us all between Pioneer Square, near most hotels, and the convention center. The dB Society held its annual “picnic” at the landmark Hotel Benson; 44 “hams” gathered between technical sessions for the Amateur Radio Lunch. In 2007, to celebrate the EMC Society’s 50th year we’re heading for the 50th state, Hawaii, in a different month – July 8 to 13 – in the Hawaii Convention Center. See you there! |
